CALABAR BRANCH: SUPPORTING MENTAL HEALTH

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Calabar branch held its Bar week activities with the Theme “We the People: Agenda for National Consensus” from 4th – 10th April 2022.
Recognising Mental health as key to the actualisation of national goals, the NBA had gave a slot to the Medical Director of Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital Calabar Dr Bassey Edet, to speak on the theme of the BAR week from a Mental Health Perspective. He delivered a lecture titled “Mental Health as a tool for Social Cohesion”.
In the lecture, he explained how National growth depends on social cohesion, stressing the importance of a mentally healthy society in actualising a socially cohesive Nigeria. He described social cohesion as comprising components such as relationships, connectedness, equality, and orientation towards a common goal.
Dr. Edet presented evidence that Nigeria was not socially cohesive and cautioned that if all hands are not on deck to control the present situation, the nation is likely to experience something similar to or even worse than the Rwandan Genocide.
As part of its corporate social responsibility to society, the NBA Calabar branch on Saturday the 9th of April 2022, visited the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital Calabar led by the State Chairman Barr. Attah Ochinke. The team was received by the Medical Director and his Management Staff.
The highlight of the visit was the donation of food items and toiletries to the hospital, and gifts to the patients and other medical staff who were on ground to support them.
