 CELEBRATES 2022 WORLD SIGHT DAY

In 1984, precisely on October 8th, when the LIONS CLUB Foundation first celebrated WORLD SIGHT DAY (WSO), little did the organization envisage that the historic celebration would become a global event. It was adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for Prevention of Blindness (IAP) as well other open bodies for Ophthalmology and Optometry, teaching hospitals, eye care groups and eye hospitals, and allied health organizations and cooperation and government institutions.

The theme for 2022, LOVE YOUR EYES, aims to promote personal attention to eye care. Almost a billion people have a visual impairment that could be prevented or cured. It cannot be over-emphasized that visual impairment and blindness can have significant and lasting effects on all aspects of life, including daily personal, community and occupational function

To mark the historic day, the management of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital in Calabar, in conjunction with Eyes and Vision Clinic, a reputable eye care centre, feted its entire staff to an awareness and sensitization programme. Highlights of the occasion included free eye tests, free medical eyeglasses, and sensitization on leading causes of visual impairment, such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and other eye diseases.

Responding to the gains of the event, a good number of hospital staff praised the management for the successful collaboration with Eyes and Vision Clinic to make the event a huge success and asked for continuous observation of the World Sight Day in Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital Calabar.

There was a general optimism that the management, in continued partnership with Eyes and Vision Clinic, would celebrate subsequent World Sight Day (WSD) celebrations to promote eye health and ensure enhanced staff performance and quality service delivery.
